Liverpool Archdiocese

The Archdiocese of Liverpool AND Events – What’s on in the Archdiocese.

The worldwide Catholic church is split into geographical regions called dioceses overseen by Bishops or archdioceses overseen by an Archbishop. Liverpool Archdiocese provides pastoral care for a diverse Catholic community within Merseyside, parts of Lancashire, Cheshire, Greater Manchester and the Isle of Man.

The Liverpool Archdiocese was served by Archbishop Malcolm McMahon (on left) from 2014 until his retirement in 2025.

He was succeeded as Archbishop of Liverpool in April 2025 by Archbishop John Sherrington (on right), who was previously an Auxiliary Bishop of Westminster.

FAMILY OF PARISHES

Each Family of Parishes meet to decide the way forward; to come together to share resources and to work together in a practical and communicative way, ensuring that they are following the Pastoral plan and the Synodal way.

Shared worship and fellowship

Some Family of Parishes have had joint events and examples in our Family of Parishes have been the joint Services of Reconciliation (Lent 2025, Our Lady Queen of Martyrs and St Swithin’s, and Advent 2025 St Teresas) Pentecost 2025 (St Teresa’s) and Christ the King 2025 (Our Lady Queen of Martyrs & St Swithin’s). These masses were followed by a parish shared table, social and quiz

The joint service on Christ the King Sunday, was celebrated with a a special focus on our Youth. The Steering Group for the Family of Parishes contacted all the local secondary schools and their chaplains.

On the day, young people from Archbishop Beck read and brought up the offertory. The young people from St John Bosco performed a Gospel dramatisation and the music was led by the joint choirs of St Teresa’s and Our Lady Queen of Martyrs together with some of the young people.

Deanery Synodal Council

Angela, our representative for the parish of St Teresa’s attended the Archdiocesan Synodal Council Meeting in November 2025. An update from all Deanery Synodal Councils was shared from across the Archdiocese. Of note, a Youth Worker has been appointed so that the young people can be encouraged and supported to part of the Synodal process and to liaise with and contribute to their local Family of Parishes.

Archdiocesan Pastoral Plan

In 2018, Archbishop Malcolm McMahon announced a synod for our archdiocese. A synod is a meeting where members of the Church come together to review issues and make decisions.

The working group listened to thousands of Synod members and took into account over 25,000 submissions and 3,500 practical proposals. The Synod took place in June 2021 and the Pastoral Plan was launched on the first Sunday of Advent in November 2021.
